Frequently Asked Questions

Below, please find a list of questions I frequently am asked. I hope these questions help you to find the summer resident camp program that is best for your son or daughter. Should you have any further questions, please contact our camp offices at: 795-3031 or email me at ymcacampkenan@yahoo.com.

  1. Will my children be supervised at all times?
Children are supervised at all times and a ratio of 1 staff member to 7 campers is constantly maintained. Two counselors and sometimes a counselor in training, live in the cabin with your child the entire week.

  2. Is YMCA Camp Kenan accredited by the American Camping Association? Yes, Camp Kenan is accredited by the American Camping Association, the highest honor any camp's programs, staff, and facilities can receive. We are currently licensed and inspected frequently by the Niagara County Health Department.

  3. Is financial assistance available for my son or daughter? Financial Assistance is available for families who demonstrate an economic need for assistance, all applications are kept confidential. Children also have an opportunity to sell candy bars to earn their way to camp.

  4. Is there a nurse on site at all times? A licensed RN, LPN or licensed EMT is on site at all times during your child's stay at camp.

  5. Do all staff undergo background checks? All staff members are subjected to a rigorous interview process including the submission of 3 letters of reference, face to face interviews, and a criminal history background check.

  6. How is the food at camp? Our gourmet chef serves all daily meals in accordance with nutritional requirements. Both Lunch and Dinner are served with a 15-item salad bar and a peanut butter and jelly bar. Vegetarian selections are also available.

  7. How are children split up? Children are put in cabins based on age in an effort to keep all activities age appropriate. Children go to most activity rotations with their cabin group, but some activities (such as swimming), are done as a Village. There are 3 Villages; Cadets are 7-9 years old, Juniors are 10-12 years old and Seniors are 13-15 years old.

  8. Can my child request to be with a friend? YMCA Camp Kenan can not guarantee cabin requests. If the children who are requesting to be together are the same age, there is a greater likely hood that the children will wind up together. Special circumstances will be taken into account.

  9. Each week has a theme, how does the theme fit into the week's activities? For every week, Wednesday is our theme day, or "Special Day". Counselors and staff work to develop a daily program that differs from our weekly rotation schedule. Activities, characters and the daily plot focus around the theme for the week.

  10. Will all children receive an opportunity to rock-climb? All children will attend an instructional rotation for rock-climbing and have the opportunity to climb on our tower during their free times. Children ages 7 to 9 will receive instruction on our indoor wall. This wall is on a smaller scale than our tower, focusing on setting children up for success.

  11. What if it rains while my child is at camp? Rain will never spoil the fun at camp. We have more than enough indoor space to keep activities going despite inclement weather.

  12. Is there an opportunity for me to tour the camp's facilities? Our annual open house is held the first weekend in June. Look for updated info for 2007 coming soon! This is an excellent chance to meet our staff, receive a guided tour of camp, and sample our chef's cooking. You can even sign your child up for camp after your tour.

  13. Are there any informational meetings being held about YMCA Camp Kenan? Yes, informational meetings are held at the Lockport Family YMCA. Meetings will include a guided tour slideshow of camp, a chance to meet members of our staff and have any questions answered in person. Call our camp office at (716) 795-3031 to receive current dates.

  14. Why is the cost of YMCA Camp Kenan so much lower than other YMCA resident camps? William Rand Kenan Jr. a local philanthropist, scientist and inventor for whom our camp is named, had a vision, to create a camp that all families would be able to afford. Before his death, Mr. Kenan set up a large endowment fund to help defray the costs of camp for each child. We are proud that his gift and vision, to this day, allows YMCA Camp Kenan to be one of the least expensive resident camps in the nation!

  15. What Should I bring to camp? You can find the "Clothing Check List" on the Registration page of the Camp Kenan website.

  16. What should I not bring to camp? You can leave all valuables including cash, jewelry and cell phones at home. Campers use paper script books at the Camp Kenan store, so do not risk losing money by bringing it to camp unnecessarily. Cell phones are NOT allowed at camp for any reason.

  17. What is Camp Kenan's mailing address? Mail can be sent to: Lockport YMCA Camp Kenan, 8571 Lower Lake Road, Barker, NY 14012. Please remember to write your camper's name and cabin number on the envelope.
